I will never forget the first time I met your dad. From dinner at his favorite Italian restaurant, to listening to stories about the happening’s in Gouverneur, to receiving gentle, but direct coaching while pistol shooting milk jugs in his back yard. He was a sweet, smart, interesting man. My sincere condolences & heartfelt sympathy to you, your brother John and your family in the loss of your dear father “Jarvie”. (Bill). May your cherished loving memories bring you laughter, comfort & peace. He certainly lived a wonderful life!

It has been over 40 years...I still carry the memory of a kind and knowledgeable Vet....he helped my Scotty dog to live a fuller life, and when the time came, he helped him out of pain to pass peacefully in my lap...and he cried with me! I've never forgotten that...

“Salt of the earth” was the saying I frequently used when describing Bill in conversations to others! He was a part of our family for the last 25+ years, sharing his home, time, talent and holidays with us.
The “salt of the earth” assignment was based on a story my mother shared about a man knocking on their door and asking to see Bill, who wasn’t home. The man handed my mom an envelope for Bill. When Bill got home and opened the envelope, he smiled. When asked about the content he said, “it was the repayment of a 15 year-old loan” and a lot of money for most people. The important part of this story was Bill’s comment, “The man is good people and I knew I’d get paid someday”. I had never met a person that believed that deeply in the good of people. From that day forward Bill was described by me as the “Salt of the earth”.
There are thousands of fond memories of Bill that may seem trite in his overall life but are things that are forever memories. These memories include our summer trips to visit what I called “summer camp” for our son Gregory. Those trips included days spent going on farm calls with Dr. Bill where calves were born, cats were chased around barns, horses were cared for, and long armed plastic gloves were needed ;-). Following the farm calls, the afternoons were spent in the clinic watching surgeries, assessments and shots, such a wonderful experience for Gregory! One personal experience when I was “helping” Dr. Bill with a cat shot. Bill showed me the technique to hold the cat but failed to tell me just how aggressive a cat could be. All I can say is, POOR Bill! The cat climbed Bill’s arm leaving many 3-inch scratches! Bill never said a word about his disappointment that I didn’t know what “hold the cat meant”, he just moved onto the next patient!
I’m also flashing back on the countless calls with medical questions and old school (common sense) approaches to our doggie's care. Throw in the gun handling and shooting lessons Bill provided to our son. I recall being amused with Bill’s thoughtful and methodical education on the proper use of a gun, to a 7 year-old boy, who was all about the glory, and not so much the safety! Bill’s patience and kindness were something to witness.
On this sad day, we are left with indelible memories of Bill and his kind heart. As the saying goes, “You may be gone from my sight, but you are never gone from my heart”. Our deepest sympathy to his sons and extended family. While his absence will be strongly felt, his legacy is to be marveled at with great pride. You are blessed to call this man your father!

I met Dr. Twinning at the continuing education classes in NNY that vets & vet techs are required to attend to retain our NYS licenses. We enjoyed many conversations about past veterinarians, Doc Baker, from Brasher Falls, ( my great grandpa) and Dr Buckley. Visits with him were so enjoyable of days gone by. He was a caring & knowledgeable vet. My sympathies to all your families.
