Thomas Meek posted a condolence

Many good memories of Paul coming into the local establishments in the evening saying come on you guys we are making ice tonight. Myself and any other able bodied persons there, would follow him out the door and to the arena. Flood all night, play cards, food and drink provided. (Out of Paul’s pocket no doubt) I was also in the arena coaching the hockey team when the first building collapsed. Two weeks later when that team was at the State Tournament in Brasher Falls, I looked across into the stands, there was Paul and Donna, Ray and Terry Pomerville in the stands with no kids or grandchildren on the team showing support for these young men. He didn’t just care about the building he cared about the people that used it. He then went about getting the next one built. My condolences to the family. RIP Paul.

I remember shoveling snow off the ice behind the fire hall before we could skate. I remember waiting in line to get into the warming room in the basement of the community center, it wasn’t very big. There are likely many people to thank for the arena in Star Lake but there is one who had an unmistakable commitment. Many of my fondest childhood memories are intertwined with that arena. Hockey, roller skating, summer concerts, community events. In the dead of winter, late at night, when we were being ushered out, was one constant. There in the center he was, flooding the ice as a means of welcoming in the next day’s memories for an entire generation. I wish I would have stopped to fully appreciate it so long ago. Thank you Paul LaRocque, you will be cherished in my memory forever.
