Obituary of Edith I. Marcellus Preston

GOUVERNUER - Edith Marcellus Preston, age 92, of Gouverneur, passed away on April 25, 2013 at the River Ledge Nursing Home in Ogdensburg. Calling hours will be held at French Funeral Home, Gouverneur on Sunday, April 28, 2012 from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. Her funeral service will immediately follow at the funeral home at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Mark Gilbert officiating. Burial will follow in the Riverside Cemetery. Donations made in memory of Edith may go to the Gouverneur Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 164, Gouverneur NY 13642. Online condolences may be made at www.frenchfuneralhomes.com. Edith was born on November 14, 1920 in Macomb to the late Willard and Mabel (Sipher) Stowell. She went to school on Pine Hill and graduated from the Gouverneur High School in 1937. Edith married Ivan T. Marcellus on January 14, 1940 at the Gouverneur Methodist Parsonage. She and Ivan owned and operated a dairy farm for several years in Somerville. Mr. Marcellus passed away on April 20, 1962. Edith married Darrell M. Preston, Sr. on September 16, 1967 at the Black River First Baptist Church. Mr. Preston passed away on June 9, 1977. Edith had worked for several businesses in the Gouverneur area including Ferguson Printing, the Ralston Purina Plant, and for Fort Drum. She was a bookkeeper for many years until her retirement in 1967. Mrs. Preston was a member of the Gouverneur Senior Citizen Club, the Pine Hill Birthday Club, E.J. Noble Hospital Auxillary, and was a former bowler. Her survivors include a daughter, Rebah Miller of Watertown; a son, Roger Marcellus of Bluffton, SC; three step-sons, Keith Preston of Oneonta, Ronald Preston of Johnstown, and Darrell Preston Jr. of Arizona. Edith is also survived by several grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. She is predeceased by a son, Richard Marcellus; her sister, Ruth Bogardus; and her brother, Walter Stowell. Her family wishes to extend their thanks to the River Ledge Nursing Home for the very caring way in which they took care of Edith.
