WEST PIERREPONT - Myrtle L. Matthews, age 98, of West Pierrepont, passed away on Tuesday, September 11, 2012 at the Maplewood Nursing Home, Canton.
Calling hours will be at Beech Plains Union Church on Friday, September 14, 2012 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Her funeral service will follow 1:00 p.m. at the church. Burial will follow in the Beech Plains Cemetery, West Pierrepont. Condolences may be made at www.frenchfuneralhomes.com.
Myrtle was born on December 31, 1913 in Clare to the late Randall and Cora (Law) Storrin. She attended Knox Memorial High School, living in Russell and West Pierrepont before moving to Hermon in 1981.
She married Heman C. Matthews on February 27, 1933 at the Russell Methodist Parsonage. Mr. Matthews passed away on February 12, 1968. Myrtle married Howard Stewart on June 14, 1980 at the home of her daughter, Dale. Mr. Stewart passed away on February 6, 1985.
Mrs. Matthews was a member of the Beech Plains Presbyterian Church, the Beech Plains Ladies Aid, the Hermon Eastern Stars, Hermon-Dekalb Senior Citizens Group, and the Home Bureau of West Pierrepont. In her free time, Myrtle enjoyed sewing, quilting, tending her flower garden, hunting and fishing.
Her survivors include her three sons, Heman Matthews, Marvin Matthews, Thomas "Gary" Matthews; four daughters, Lewana Bullock, Dale Hovey, Elizabeth VanBrocklin and Delight VanBrocklin; She is also survived by numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
She is predeceased by her brothers, Leo, Leland, Burton, and Randy Storrin; her sisters, Lois Storrin, Violet Storrin, and Betty Earl and Ethel Wright; and two grandchildren.
