ANTWERP - Genevieve "Hookie" M. Mitchell, mother of 13, age 90 of 19 Main Street, Antwerp, passed away on February 21, 2013 at the Carthage Area Hospital Skilled Nursing Unit. Calling hours will be at French Funeral Home, Gouverneur on Sunday, February 24th from 2:00 - 5:00 p.m. Her funeral will be on Monday, February 25, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at the Gouverneur United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the East Riverside Cemetery, Gouverneur. Mrs. Mitchell was born on February 8, 1923 in Jersey City, NJ, daughter of Gladys M. Dashnaw and Cyril Filiatrault. She attended Antwerp and Gouverneur schools. She married Lewis L. Mitchell on October 7, 1939 in Canton with the Rev. F.J. Brown officiating. Mr. Mitchell passed away on September 18, 1998. Mrs. Mitchell worked at the cheese factory in Antwerp and was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Genevieve and her husband were the first members of the Church of God in Mexico, NY and helped to start churches in Mexico, Richville and Watertown. She was a Cub Scout leader, a member of the Antwerp Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary and a cook for the Antwerp senior citizens meal program. She was also an avid baker and crafter. Hookie is survived by six sons, Roger (Shirley) of Laurel MT, Bruce of Antwerp, Curley of Supply NC, Wallace (Doreen) of Heuvelton, Dean (Sandra) of Oxbow, Kenneth (Tina) of Carthage; seven daughters, Shirley Cline of Heuvelton, Iva (Charles) Taylor of Central Square, Alice (Walter) Zeller of Hammond, Joann Cross of Supply NC, Glenda (Alton) Walrath of Gouverneur, Nancy (John) Wilson of Rensselear Falls, Addie Mitchell of Gouverneur; two brothers, Kenneth Filiatrault of Gouverneur and Ivan Filiatrault of Antwerp. She is also survived by 57 grandchildren, 79 great-grandchildren and 19 great-great-grandchildren. She is predeceased by three sisters, Ruth Johnson, Vivian Culbertson and Vida Aldrich; two brothers, Cyril and Wallace Filiatrault; seven grandchildren, Larry Jr. and Joe Cross, Adeline Mitchell, Steven Mitchell, Walter Zeller, Jr., Tracy Bango, and Michael Wilson; one great-grandchild, Kyle Bell; and four great-great-grandchildren, Kaedence and Kierstin Brown, Derek Kutt and Adam Bango. Mrs. Mitchell's pallbearers are her beloved granddaughters, Jenny Garret, Tammy Korpiel, Terri Yoder, Lorna Zeller, Nancy Cross, Iva Walrath, Julie Wilson, Sharon Mitchell, Diane Clement, Danielle Mitchell, Teresa Bango, and Kendra Mitchell.
