SOMERVILLE- Nellie M. Stowell, age 85, of Somerville, passed away on Tuesday, February 05, 2013 at her home under the loving care of her family and Hospice of St. Lawrence Valley. Nellie's calling hours will be on Saturday, February 9, 2013 from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. at French Funeral Home, Gouverneur. Her funeral service will follow on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. at the funeral home with Lay Minister Judy Sibley of the Spragueville United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will follow at the Hailesboro Cemetery. Online condolences may be sent to www.frenchfuneralhomes.com. Nellie was born on July 14, 1927 in the town of Fowler to the late George and Nellie (Fields) Kyer. She attended Gouverneur High School. Nellie was a homemaker. A marriage to Linton Hance ended in divorce. Nellie then married Walter W. Stowell on April 18, 1963 at the Methodist Parsonage in Whitehall, MD. Walter passed away on January 17, 2013. Nellie was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxillary Post #6338 where she was past president from 1981-82 and again from 1991-92. She was also a member of the Gouverneur Senior Citizens and the E.J. Noble Hospital Auxillary. She was an avid crocheter. Nellie is survived by a son, Linton D. and Bonnie Hance of Fowler; two daughters, Nancy J. and Harold Worthley of Rensselaer Falls and Diane S. and Robert Recher of Somerville; a step daughter, Vicki A. and William Peck of LaFargeville; two step sons, James W. Stowell of Dexter and Steven R. Stowell of Gouverneur; two brothers, Walter A. Kyer of Camden and Frederick C. Kyer of Fine; 13 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, and her nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by a son, Wayne E. Hance, who died in infancy; a step son, Timothy Stowell who died in 1973; six brothers, Alvey, Grant, Robert, Alfred, George Murry and William Kyer; and two sisters, Grace Cummings and Dorothy Brown. Donations may be made in Nellie's memory to the Gouverneur Volunteer Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 164, Gouverneur, NY 13642.
