Obituary of Joan E. Karaszkiewicz

GOUVERNEUR- Joan E. Karaszkiewicz, age 75, of Gouverneur, passed away on Sunday, September 10, 2017 at her home under the loving care of her husband and Hospice of St. Lawrence Valley. There will be a funeral mass for Joan on Friday, September 22, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at St. James Catholic Church with Fr. Shane Lynch officiating. Joan was born on November 5, 1941 in Philadelphia, PA to the late Otto and Katherine (Sigman) Schmidt. She graduated from Bartram High School in Philadelphia, PA in 1959 and then married Edward J. Karaszkiewicz on February 13, 1960 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Philadelphia, PA with Fr. Leon officiating. In 1990, Joan and Edward moved to Gouverneur, NY and bought Hillside View Farm, where the couple raised beef cattle. Joan enjoyed gardening, reading and crocheting. Surviving is her husband of 57 years, Edward; three sons and their wives, Edward and Nola III, David and Gina and Andrew and Natalie; two daughters and their husbands, Margaret and Jim Deese and Susan and Mark McGuigan; a sister, Margaret Glenn; 11 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren, and one on the way and several nieces and nephews. Joan is predeceased by her parents; two brothers, Robert and Otto Schmidt and two sisters, Marie Buchanan and Dorothy Arico.
