HARRISVILLE- Carl R. Stevens, age 92, of Harrisville, passed away on Thursday, July 10, 2014 at his home under the loving care of his family and Hospice of St. Lawrence Valley. Calling hours for Carl will be on Monday, July 14, 2014 from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. with his funeral immediately following at 12:00 p.m. at French Funeral Home, Gouverneur with Rev. David Hurtle officiating. Burial with military honors will be at Harrisville Cemetery. Carl was born on August 17, 1921in Pitcairn, NY to the late Eben H. and Julia (TenEcke) Stevens. He attended Geer Corners School in Harrisville. Carl served in the United States Army during WWII were he was a surgical technician at the 73rd station hospital. He served from 1942 until his honorable discharge in 1945. He married Bessie M. McEathron on September 1, 1945 at the United Church of Richville with Rev. Burston officiating. Bessie passed away on October 5, 2007. Carl worked as a farmer for several years around the Gouverneur and Harrisville area. He also worked as a roofer for Antwerp Roofing Co. for two years; worked for the Village of Gouverneur; International Talc Mill; St. Joseph's Lead; he trained to be a butcher at Cappelino's Slaughter House in Gouverneur; he worked for 13 years at J&L Steel and then retired after 20 years of service at Wassaic Development Center in 1981. Carl was a member of the Gouverneur VFW. He enjoyed playing bingo, woodworking and gardening. Carl is survived by two sons and their wives, Gary A. and Peggy Stevens of Crown Point, NY and Carl R. and Dawn Stevens II of Cornelius, NC; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Rosemary C. Charlton of Gouverneur, NY, Janet M. and Henry Patrick of Harrisville, NY and Carla J. and William Olmstead of Statesville, NC. He is also survived by 21 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren, 10 great-great grandchild and several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his wife, Bessie; four brothers, Harold, Weldon, Glenn and Douglas Stevens and two half brothers, Floyd and Lloyd Harris.
