OSWEGATCHIE- Alton A. Dumas, age 63, of Oswegatchie, NY passed away on Monday, March 17, 2014 at his home under the loving care of his family and friends and St. Lawrence Valley Hospice. Calling hours for Alton will be on Friday, March 21, 2014 from 2-4 until 7-9 p.m. at French Family Funeral Home in Star Lake. His funeral service will be on Saturday, March 22nd at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home with Rev. Beth Benham officiating. Burial will follow at Woodland Cemetery in Fine, NY. Condolences may be made online at www.frenchfuneralhomes.com. Alton was born on August 12, 1950 in Malone, NY to the late Victor and June (Cornell) Dumas. He graduated from Clifton-Fine Central School in 1970. Alton married Denise M. Harris on June 30, 1973 at St. Anthony's Church in Newton Falls. Denise passed away on October 5, 2009. Alton was a maintenance worker at Clifton-Fine Central School for 17 years. While he worked at Clifton-Fine, he truly enjoyed the children there. The kids would often plan ahead and color coordinate with him, wearing the same color on specific days. He was a member of the Green Mountain Draft Horse Club in Vermont. He enjoyed hooking up his horses, cutting wood, picking on his friends and going out to eat with them. Before his wife died, the couple loved to sit together on the porch swing, drinking their coffee. Alton is survived by his son, Brad A. Dumas and his companion, Rhonda LaParr of Oswegatchie; a daughter, Angie J. Dumas of Fine; two sisters, Veronica Harris and her husband Arlo of Milton, FL and Theresa Ellis of Florida; two brothers, Rick Dumas and Paul Dumas both of Canton; and a grandson, Dalton Dumas. Donations may be sent to Brad Dumas at 178 Schuyler Rd., Oswegatchie, NY 13670, were a trust fund will be set up for Alton's grandson, Dalton.
