EDWARDS - Mrs. Mary Thornton, age 81, formerly of Edwards, passed away on January 31, 2014 at the Hospice Residence in Watertown.
Mary was born on April 2, 1932 in Lisbon, NY to the late Leon and Francis Mary (Fleming) LaRue, Sr. She grew up in Hammond and married Carl M. Jackson in 1948. Carl passed away on June 25, 1965. She then married Allen L. Thornton, Sr. on May 13, 1967. The couple lived in Wanakena for many years before moving to Edwards in 1997. Allen passed away on August 26, 2009.
Mrs. Thornton was a housewife and mother. She also was an ordained minister. She enjoyed quilting, crocheting and baking. She has greatly enjoyed the many blessings God has graced her life with.
Her survivors include three children from her first marriage, Alan (Charlene) Jackson of Philadelphia, NY, Kevin (Pam) Jackson of Cape Vincent, Joan (Bill) Boyd of Hamlin; a son from her second marriage, Joe and Cindy Thornton of Whitesville, NC; two stepchildren, Allen "Bud" (Linda) Thornton, Jr. of Amsterdam, Bonnie (Richard) Gobber of Montrose, CO; a daughter-in-law, Linda Jackson; three sisters, Betty Ross of Ogdensburg, Leona Loeber of Black Lake, Eleanor Sullivan of Carthage; and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She is predeceased by her husbands, a daughter, Mary Grobsmith, a son, Wayne Jackson and her brother, Leon LaRue, Jr.
Calling hours will be at the New Beginnings Assembly of God in South Edwards on Thursday, February 6, 2014 from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. Her funeral service will follow at 12:00 p.m. with Rev. William Malone officiating. Burial in the Kinne Cemetery, Antwerp will be in the spring. Condolences may be made online at www.frenchfuneralhomes.com.
