GOUVERNEUR - Mrs. Catharine Wetmore, age 93, of Gouverneur, passed away on Monday evening, September 24, 2012 at E.J. Noble Hospital.

Catharine was born on May 5, 1919 in Macomb to the late Arthur and Olla (Bresee) Churchill. She attended the country school before transferring to the Gouverneur Dean School where she graduated in 1936. Her graduating class of 1936 was the last to have their graduating ceremony in the Gralyn Theater. She continued her education with nurse's training at Crouse Hospital, Syracuse and became a Registered Nurse in 1940.

Catharine married John G. Wetmore on June 22, 1946 at the Gouverneur United Methodist Church with the Rev. Harold Thomas officiating. Mr. Wetmore passed away on July 17, 1999. Catharine met John while working at the former VanDuzee Hospital in Gouverneur. Later, in 1950, Mrs. Wetmore was pivotal in moving the patients from VanDuzee to the new E.J. Noble Hospital where she worked for many years. Catharine also went on to work for St. Lawrence County Public Health for the last ten years of her nursing career.

In her free time, Mrs. Wetmore loved to read and knit. In her younger years she enjoyed fishing and had continued swimming at the Gouverneur High School pool into her eighty's.

Mrs. Wetmore is survived by her son, John Jay "Scooter" Wetmore of Gouverneur. Memorial donations in memory of Catharine may send them to the E. J. Hospital, 77 W. Barney St., Gouverneur NY 13642.
