Dick Ashley was an amazing, incredibly talented Friend, Mentor, and Community Leader!! I first met Dick when he fired the starting gun for the Trout Lake Quad (Picture below). Our Friendship grew as I visited "the Shop" often to share a love of some shared hobbies (woodworking) and some I wish I had learned (stained glass). He also became close to my WWII Dad who was a retired Industrial Arts Teacher - watching them was magic! Numerous boat rides, craft shows, and visits were special times at Trout lake - wish we had lived closer! This past year, I finally joined in several card games, a new experience, that were fun because of Dick. I am actually a couple "pennies" ahead - he gave each meeting a special spirit. And our Family reaches out to Liz and all the kids - Dick held you all close and owned bragging rights to you all - Know he is missed!! Visits toTrout will not be the same without our Friend Dick Ashley - he & Liz are in our Prayers! Bill & Sue Welser

Duck was our custodian at Sherman School when I taught there. He went above and beyond to help us. He was an amazing person who worked hard and achieved much in his life. My sympathies to his family.

I am very saddened by the loss of a very good friend and County co-worker. Dick was multi talented and always gave his best to all of his projects. I have many fond memories of Dick and will alway remember the fun times we had at the County and garage sailing at Warrensberg’s Worlds Largest Garage Sale each fall. Rest in Peace Dick ! Prayers for Liz and family. Bill Dibble

I am saddened by news of Dick's death. Like many County Retirees, I have fond memories of him, his kindness and dedication to County Government. He kept his secretary busy writing memos and "whereas epistles" to everyone in County Government which were informative and entertaining. Visitors to the Courthouse would often comment about its beauty. Dick's skills and craftsmanship contributed to that. When the courtroom was remodeled he spent much time in building the beautiful hanging lights, and dedicated them to the late Judge Shea. Dick was a friend and will be greatly missed. Condolences to the family. Bob McNeil

Our prayers and thoughts go to Richard’s family. We grew up together in Oburg - he was one of a kind - could fix any thing. Did well with his life. His stain glass is in St John’s Church in Morristown. Rest in Peace Dick.

I treasure my memories of Dick Ashley over the time that we worked together for St. Lawrence County. As a dedicated County employee, he always gave his best effort in caring for the County's buildings and grounds. Not to be missed, Dick did so with a smile that was contagious to all who knew him. I greatly enjoyed the times that we played a game a chess over a lunchtime sandwich and will always treasure the inlaid wooden chess board that he crafted and presented to me as I left county employment. I wish eternal peace to my old friend, Dick Ashley.

Liz, Debbie, Brenda and Family,
You have my sincere sympathy.
Richard was a unique man many talents.Throughout the 60 plus years that I knew him he was always seeking new challanges
and for the most part carried them through with great success.
Everytime I see St Lawrence County seal of the running deer I think of Richard's many creations.
Richard did many wonderful things for many people including my family and me. They will always be remembered.
Richard definitely left this world better than he found it.
God bless you Dear Friend.

My husband Steve and I have spent a lot of time around the County Courthouse over the last nearly 50 years. Steve was the County Attorney for a few years, and then the Court Attorney for the judges in County Court for about thirty more years. Dick was around the Courthouse, making sure that everything was working well, for many of those years. He was friendly, kind, and often helpful to me personally when I was there on Reachout business, or when I was visiting Steve at work.
I knew Dick from an entirely different direction, too. We had some dear friends, Dottie and Bob Dow, in common. Dottie was my mentor and my matron of honor, and Bob put up with both of us. ;) This connection is the reason why I knew about his work in stained glass (because Bob made stained glass, too) before Dick delivered the two magnificent stained glass seals he'd made for the County Courthouse. I was lucky enough to be there the day they were unveiled. You can see his beautiful gifts to the people of St. Lawrence County here: https://www.northcountrypublicradio.org/news/story/23693/20140107/in-pictures-the-history-of-the-st-lawrence-county-courthouse They're very special. As was their maker.
My husband Steve's been retired for nearly ten years now, but he remembers Dick with fondness. 'I'm sorry he's gone. I liked him." ~ Steve Easter
We're thinking of all of you who loved Dick as you grieve. My Ukrainian friends would say "bright memory" at a time like this. I certainly have bright memories of Dick, and I know you do too.

Dick was one of the most knowledgeable, friendly people I have ever met. He took pride in the appearance of St. Lawrence County buildings and grounds, loved being on his boat at the Lake and was a master at woodworking and stained glass. I remember him as an "old school" type of person, who would always speak kindly about people, not to mention the practical jokes he would play on those who would then pay him back in a friendly way..or vice versa. Most of all, I remember him as a friend throughout our working years and beyond. Rest in Peace Captain Dick. You were an inspiration to us all.
