Joyce was born on March 23, 1942 at the family home in Natural Dam to the late Bernard and Ina (Morehouse) Sloan. She attended Edwards Central School and on September 9, 1961 she married William H. Phelps. William passed away on November 17, 2023. Surviving is a son and daughter-in-law, James and Jane Phelps; a daughter and son-in-law, Jeanine "Buffy" and David Youngs; two brothers, John and Robert Sloan; four sisters, Beverly Thomas, Marilyn Mackin, Janet Easton and Rita Bukowski; eight grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Joyce is predeceased by her husband William; her parents; a brother Bernard Sloan Jr. and a sister, Ina Ober. Known as a complete animal lover, her son Jim has fond memories of when his mother actually wasn't so fond of "Tame" turkeys that they raised. A Matriarch and grandmother to many, Joyce's kindest nature radiated through her role as a loving grandmother. She reveled in playing board games, building sandcastles in the pile, and assisting her grandchildren in their imaginative quests to dig to unknown lands. Joyce's laughter echoed as she embraced the joys of family, becoming the grandchildren's unwavering cheerleader. Her affection extended to her furry companions. Her beloved Max who shared her home and heart. Joyce had a knack for capturing life's beauty through the lens of her camera, freezing moments in time that will forever resonate in the hearts of those she leaves behind. A social soul, Joyce cherished catching up with old friends and engaging in heartfelt conversations over the phone. Her sneaky beer, a source of lighthearted joy, added a touch of warmth to family gatherings, creating moments that will be cherished by all who knew her. As we bid farewell to Joyce Jean Sloan Phelps, let us celebrate a life well lived, marked by love, laughter, and an enduring connection to the simple pleasures she held dear. Grandpa's voice may echo "Hurry up, Joyce", but in our hearts her spirit remains a beacon of love and warmth that will endure for generations to com.
