It's difficult to begin to put words to the importance of my relationship with Mrs. LaWall as her student at HDCS (Class of 1994). She almost had a heart attack when I got my ear pierced on a field trip to Montreal and gave me copies of Sartre and Hermann Hesse books, fueling my budding interest in existential philosophy. She ostensibly taught me something about the French language, enough that I can parse ballpark meaning and politely ask francophones if they speak English.
My experience of Carol was that she cared deeply for her students and I am certain this extended to many others in her life.
John, if you happen to read this (I came to the news in January '26) I am so sorry for your loss and I am so thankful your mother was a cultural lifeline for me and so many others during our high school years.

Carol, or "Senora Lawall" as we all knew her, was the greatest Spanish teacher ever and just an all around great woman. She was a mother/grandmother to all, she made the outcasts feel welcome in her classroom. She was truly a friend to the friendless. She will be missed.

Señora LaWall, where do I even begin? You were such a kind and generous soul, my favorite teacher of all time. I even recently started learning Spanish again because I was thinking about how much I loved learning it - and I know that love for learning another language was all thanks to you. You made learning fun but, more importantly, you also made coming into class every day fun. High school was a rough spot for a lot of us, myself included, but even on bad days it was worth coming in just to see you. You were always so encouraging and supportive and you always, always, had a kind word to offer. I remember the year you let some boys in the class bring an xbox in to play Halo before Christmas break and how funny it was watching you learn to play. You laughed at yourself during it, too. You seemed to be having fun and we were all having fun with it, too. I remember giving you a little notebook of my bad poetry because you encouraged me to keep writing it, you gave me confidence when I was so badly lacking it. The last time I saw you was when you were a tutor at my college. You helped me with a very personal essay and we cried together and you hugged me close. I felt, then, like maybe things would be okay even when my life felt like it was crumbling at my feet. I absolutely love you, Señora. You were one of the brightest spots in my life and I'll spend the rest of my time here sharing your kindness and my happy and silly stories about you with people. You're so terribly missed, but you'll be so fondly remembered well into the future. Thank you for everything. For the kindness and laughter and support and everything in between. Rest in peace and hopefully I'll see you again one day.
