Born in Baraboo, Wisconsin, Carl Pagel lived a life defined by curiosity, dedication, and deep connection to those around him. While studying at the University of Wisconsin–Whitewater, he met Jane Hamilton, who would become his beloved wife of more than 60 years. The two married on June 27, 1964, celebrated their honeymoon with a memorable adventure to Alaska, and soon after set off in their packed car to begin a new chapter in Vermont.

Carl earned both his master's degree (1969) and doctorate (1975) in Zoology from the University of Vermont. His doctoral research—A Study of the Influence of Pulp and Paper Waste on the Benthos of Southern Lake Champlain—reflected his deep care for the natural world. For most of his career, Carl served as Vermont's Wetlands Coordinator, working with quiet determination and scientific insight to protect the state's vital ecosystems.

From 1967 to 2005, Carl and Jane made their home in Vermont. Later, they settled in Heuvelton, New York, where Carl continued to share his time, talents, and gentle warmth with all who knew him.

A generous volunteer and steadfast mentor, Carl devoted himself to leading Boy Scout troops and camps, championing conservation through Ducks Unlimited, and serving faithfully in the DePeyster Masonic Lodge—where he held roles including Master and, most recently, Treasurer. In recognition of his outstanding commitment, he was honored with the Dedicated Service Award for exemplary service to Masonry. A devoted member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, Carl brought the same unwavering spirit to his faith. Whether guiding young minds or lending a hand to a neighbor, his enthusiasm was both enduring and heartfelt.

He found joy in duck and deer hunting, fishing—near and far—and had a rare talent for turning strangers into friends through laughter and good stories. A teacher at heart, he loved introducing others to the oddities and wonders of the insect world, always ready to nurture curiosity wherever it sparked.

Some of Carl's most peaceful hours were spent on the porch of his secluded cabin, watching wildlife stir around a quiet pond. A lifelong Green Bay Packers fan and a good-luck charm at Ducks Unlimited dinners, Carl was known not only for his warmth but also for his generous spirit. He also had a sweet tooth for apple pie—especially when shared with family and friends, often accompanied by a story or two.

He was the kind of neighbor you could always count on, a true friend to all, and a cherished part of the local Amish community—offering rides to expectant mothers and lending a helping hand wherever it was needed. His kindness was instinctive. His impact, immeasurable.

Carl leaves behind a legacy of service, passion, and abiding love. His presence strengthened the communities he touched, and his care made the world a better place.

He is survived by his wife, Jane; sons, Brian and Jon; sister, Carol; and grandchildren, Josiah, Bella, and Trevor. Carl is predeceased by two sons, Erik and Paul Pagel and a brother, Gary Yost.

He will be deeply missed.
