Please share a memory of Roy to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
STAR LAKE – Roy A. Berg, age 65, passed away March 1, 2025 at SUNY Upstate Medical Hospital in Syracuse, NY with family at his side.
There will be no calling hours or funeral services at this time. A celebration of life is being planned at the Star Lake Fire Department in the spring. Arrangements are with French Family Funeral Home in Star Lake. Condolences may be shared online at www.frenchfuneralhomes.com.
Roy was born in Oceanside NY on January 22, 1960 to the late Olaf R. and Marilyn R. (Anderson) Berg of West Babylon Long Island, NY. He graduated from West Babylon Senior High School in June 1978. Roy married and the couple owned and operated the Twin Lakes Hotel, his wife's family business. The marriage ended in divorce, but produced two beautiful daughters that Roy adored and nurtured. Roy was a proud father and raised his daughters to be strong and independent adults able to tackle anything.
Roy began his working career in the construction industry at Fenley & Nicol Environmental as a 14-year-old helping around the shop after school. He worked his way up at the company and became a journeyman in the electrical union. He moved off Long Island in 1990 to help the company expand in the Capital Region around Albany. In 1993, Roy moved to Star Lake and became a business owner as a founding partner in Adirondack Tank Services, Inc. Roy also worked part-time at a Sunmount Developmental house in Star Lake and as a specialist for the Star Lake Water District during emergency situations. He joined the team at the Clifton-Fine Central School as a bus driver and mechanic where he really connected with the students. "Mr. Roy" was a favorite bus driver for many children. Roy was elected president of the union at the school. He worked until becoming disabled in June 2024.
Roy was always there to lend a helping hand, especially when his special "MacGyver" skills were necessary. He would always find unique ways to fix anything, using unconventional methods that most people would never think of. This talent was often used and one friend thought that Roy was probably fixing heavens gates as he was welcomed in.
Roy was elected as a Star Lake Fire Commissioner in January 2022. He joined the Star Lake Fire Department and Rescue Squad as a volunteer, responding to a majority of their calls over the last few years. As the primary ambulance driver, his community engagement thrived and his efforts to pitch in and assist were recognized and sincerely appreciated. His personal satisfaction was in helping people, whether he knew you or not.
Roy was an athlete who excelled in soccer, softball, and bowling. If there was a game, Roy was going to participate as either a player or fan. He was an avid NY Yankees fan who was always up for attending any professional sports with friends. He attended many Yankees, Mets, Islanders, and St. Johns college basketball games when growing up on Long Island. Roy also enjoyed animals, especially his dogs Quinn, Diezel, and Journey.
Roy is survived by his two daughters, Raine Berg and Reece Berg of Star Lake; a sister Nancy House (Ken) of Pine Plains, NY; a sister Laura Capone (Ralph) of Lenexa, Kansas; and a brother Glen Berg (Mariana) of Center Moriches, NY. He is also survived by nieces/nephews Melissa, Brianna, Jake, Alex, Teo, great niece McKenna, and a few cousins.
Donations in memory of Roy may be made to the Star Lake Fire Department and Rescue Squad, PO Box 22, Star Lake NY 13690.
