FOWLER – John "Jack" Hunter Ashley, age 81, of Fowler, passed away on Friday, December 5, 2014 at the United Helpers Maplewood Nursing Home in Canton. There will be a graveside service in the Fairview Cemetery, Edwards, on Tuesday, December 9, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. William Malone officiating. Arrangements are with French Funeral Home, Gouverneur. Jack was born on January 9, 1933 in Fullerville to the late William and Clara (Simmons) Ashley. He graduated from the Knox Memorial High School in Russell in 1950 and served in the United States Army from 1951 until 1954 during the Korean Conflict. Jack worked as a truck driver for Ruston Paving Company in Jamesville while living in Syracuse. A marriage to Catherine M. McNeil ended in divorce. Jack married Greta O'Hearn Dygert on June 21, 1986 in Richville. Greta passed away on April 26, 2003. Jack enjoyed going for motorcycle and four-wheeler rides. He had a sweet tooth, especially for pies. He is survived by a daughter, Jacqueline Ashley of Gouverneur; a son, Joseph Ashley of Gouverneur; a brother, Patrick Ashley of Brasher and Florida; and 2 grandchildren, Staci M. Ashley and Kimberly J. Ashley. He is also survived by his four step-sons, Edward, Gary, David, and Richard Dygert. In addition to his parents and wife, Jack is predeceased by three sisters, Anna Travis, Clara "Teenie" Hale, Julia Travis; and two brothers, Adelbert and William Ashley.
