WANAKENA – William "Bill" H. Nevil, age 62, of Wanakena passed away at home on October 17, 2014 under the loving care of his wife, sister Nancy, friends and Hospice after a 2 ½ year battle with cancer. Bill was born on September 12, 1952 in Cooperstown, NY to the late John "Jack" and Anne (Rombold) Nevil. In 1974 he received his Bachelors degree in history from Oneonta State and in 1984 with a AAS in Forest technology (salutatorian) from the Wanakena Ranger School. Bill married Kathleen "Kathie" Kent on August 20, 1981 in Cut'n Shoot, TX. Their attending couple at the wedding was Yvonne and Jim Wolvington of the Ringling Brothers Circus. From 1977 – 1983 Bill worked in signal maintenance for the Burlington Northern Railway System in Fort Worth, TX. In 1984 he worked for Robert Cross Land Surveying in Bearsville, NY. From 1985 – 2005 Bill worked as a construction engineer for the D.O.T. Region 7 and was the Assistant Resident Engineer for St. Lawrence County from 2006 until his retirement in 2010. Bill was a very avid Syracuse University fan who enjoyed hiking, fishing, kayaking and especially golfing. He loved his family very much; especially his wife, Kathie and ALL of his very special friends in Wanakena, Star Lake and the surrounding area. His survivors include his wife of Wanakena; 2 beloved cats, Gray Kitty and Cinnamon; three sisters, Jean and Phil Skinner of Myrtle Beach, SC, Nancy Hall of Cooperstown, NY, Paul and Donald Snowden of Brevard, NC; sisters-in-law, Mary Brayden Nevil of Decatur, GA, Genevieve and Wes Kent-Waller of Binghamton, NY; and his brother-in-law, David and Lynn Kent of Edmeston, NY. He is also survived by many beloved nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Bill is predeceased by his parents and a brother, Jake Nevil. Kathy wishes to extend a very special thank you to St. Lawrence County Hospice and the doctors, nurses and employees of the Center for Cancer Care at Canton-Potsdam Hospital, Clifton-Fine Hospital, and Samaritan Hospital. There will be no funeral service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wanakena Historical Association, the Adirondack Presbyterian Church, the Wanakena Ranger School Alumni Association or a charity of your choice.
